Genus Gryllotalpa

Four blade-like fingers on each foretibia; auditory tympanum covered. Forefemur with blade-like lobe. Apex of hindtibia armed with 7 spurs, 4 on inside and 3 on outside. Hindtibia usually armed along upper inner margin with three or four long spines. Length 26-50 mm.

Species

Three species of this genus occur north of Mexico. G. gryllotalpa is an immigrant from Europe, established in New Jersey; G. major is native to North America's tall grass prairies and is now restricted to their remnants; and G. cultriger is a barely known western species.
