short-winged meadow katydid
Conocephalus brevipennis

Mating pair, Cumberland County, North Carolina.
The male is on the right (the ovipositor belongs to the female on the left).
Photograph by Lynette Schimming, used by permission.
If the male were to straighten out, the female would be mounted on the male,
which is the ancestral mating position in Orthoptera (see Alexander & Otte 1967).
