Like all organisms, honey bees are afflicted by diseases and pests. The identification of the problem is paramount. Many conditions affect bees for which causes are not readily discernable. When this happens, the beekeeper must become a detective of sorts and carefully observe and write down the symptoms.

The local and state bee inspector can also be consulted to obtain a diagnosis. Often, these persons have detailed knowledge about their particular area. They also have the advantage of seeing a lot of colonies and having major discussions with a wide range of beekeepers, all with possibly different management skills and styles.

Major introduced pests have taken up the beekeeping industry's time and energy over the last two decades. Of special important are Africanized honey bees,   Varroa and Tracheal bee mites, and the small hive beetle.
