08/12/98 - Sebring Mediterranean Fruit Fly Update - DACS

Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS)

Report Dated 08/10/98

Sebring

Fly count:    We had more flies picked up Friday - I believe the number was 7-8, with a total count at 133, since the first find on July 9.  I have not had word yet on Sunday's results.

Traps: As of Saturday there were 4486 traps deployed in a 207 square mile survey area:  3468 Jackson, 265 McPhail, and 753 yellow panel traps.

Treatment:    Saturday's treatment began at first light and was completed by midday.  There were no mechanical complications, and the weather was very favorable.   Drift card data from the two of the three sites monitored by FDACS staff looked very good.  At the third site (Red Beach, I believe), the inspector noted that cut-off may not have been as accurate as observed previously.   FDACS will follow-up with program directors if laboratory samples confirm the inspector's observations.  All samples, including water from the lakes at these sites, have been received, and results should be available by mid-week.

The next aerial treatment is scheduled for Saturday, August 15th, weather permitting, and pending EPA approval.

Environmental Monitoring: The following results are from last week's sampling of the Fyfanon malathion product and from the bait mixture:
                                    malathion        malaoxon        isomalathion
Product formulation:           96.8%            BDL                    0.18%
Bait mixture:                      20.3%

Product formulation results are within registered product specifications.

Health Monitoring:    no report

My understanding is that EPA has not yet approved the next series of treatments. USDA's revised submission is pending additional state input, after which it will be sent to EPA. We are anticipating approval for at least three more treatments, possibly a fourth.  I will keep you informed of the progress.
