07/27/98 - Sebring Mediterranean Fruit Fly Update - DACS

Report Dated 07/27/98

Sebring

Fly count: Two more flies were found Friday in the central core area, bringing the total to 117 since the initial find on July 9. This will not impact the size of either the treatment area or the regulated (quarantine area).

Traps: As of Thursday, there were 3,718 traps deployed: 2961 Jacksons, 4 Cue Lures, 176 McPhails, and 577 yellow panels. (Weekend data will be available in the next update).

Treatment: Saturday's aerial bait treatment went smoothly. Three helicopters were used, and the entire treatment was completed around midday. Compliance personnel noted several small incursions into protected areas - they are minor, and similar to those seen in other programs. (Pilots, particularly helicopter pilots, have a lot to keep track of as they make their flights -they are flying at low altitudes, often have several news helicopters following, etc.) Visual observations at monitoring sights were very favorable.

Ground crews continue to treat host materials in buffered areas and to host materials outside the aerial treatment zone in the southern block. Because of the size of this area , and the strain on resources, ground treatment in this area will be made to the extent possible to the untreated portion of the southern block. Recall that the aerial application is to the portion which is largely commercial groves, encompassing less than half of the designated nine square-mile proposed treatment block. Should additional flies be trapped in this block, the decision to limit aerial bait treatment will be revisited.

Environmental Monitoring: No report.

Health Monitoring: No report.
