06/12/98 - Bradenton and Umatilla Mediterranean Fruit Fly Update - DACS

Report Dated 06/11/98

Bradenton

No flies were picked up yesterday - traps are still being read today. The fly count is stable at 548.

Aerial bait treatment began on schedule last night, around 10:00 pm and was completed around 3:30 am. There were 8-9 TV and news crews there to observe. We did have a malfunction with one plane's on-board computer, which did not record the deposition cut-ons and cut-offs; however, the GPS units were running, and the flight path of the aircraft was recorded. The malfunction was corrected today. There were no problems with the second aircraft.

Ground application continues, in the buffered areas surrounding identified water bodies and the two hospitals.

There are 2940 traps deployed in the area: 2570 Jacksons, 86 McPhails, and 284 yellow panels.

Environmental Monitoring:
No data are available yet; however, the preliminary indications, based on visual inspection only, look fairly good.

Health monitoring:
Both the FDACS Helpline and the DOH Hotline experienced a large volume of calls throughout the day yesterday and during last night. Calls have dropped off somewhat today, but remain higher than during the ground application. DOH logged 10 calls which reported symptoms/health complaints, six of these were received by the Manatee CHD, 4 by the Tampa Poison Information Center. Callers reported symptoms which include respiratory complaints, headache, fatigue, insomnia, gi complaints, nausea/vomiting, blurred vision, muscle pain, skin complaints, and dizziness. DOH is following up on these.

I've had several calls asking about when the next application will take place. USDA/FDACS will make that decision after they've had a chance to evaluate the response to this treatment. As I think you all know, our objective is to effect an appropriate level of suppression, with the least disruption to the community, so we can follow with sterile release. The number of applications and the interval between each will depend on weather, fly counts and distribution, etc.

Umatilla

Again - no more flies. This program appears to be doing very well, and barring any more finds, this weekend should complete the aerial bait treatment for Umatilla.

Trapping continues, with 4723 traps deployed: 3442 Jacksons, 1026 yellow panels, 205 McPhails, and 50 IPTs.

To date, regulatory personnel have conducted over 1427 inspections in the regulated area.
