ALS 3203 - Lesson 4
Using Windows Notepad or Wordpad to Create and Modify "Text Files"

The simplest Windows text editor is Notepad. This accessory program has limited text formatting capabilities. For this lesson you will copy the text displayed in a second window (open below). In the second window you will find a short paragraph with text surrounded by brackets {fields} into which you are to insert actual special characters, replacing the {bracketed term}. For example, the field {degree} would be changed to {°}.
  • The simplest way to accomplish this exercise is to copy the paragraph (click inside the second window to make that the active window (you won't see your cursor but the top title bar will turn to dark blue), then press Ctrl-a to select everything, then Ctrl-c to copy). This copies the text to the Windows Clipboard.
  • Open Notepad (Start, Run, Notepad), then paste (insert) (Ctrl-v) the copied paragraph into Notepad. Proceed with replacing bracketed character fields with their special characters. Save the file into your als3203 folder.Once completed, select the finished paragraph in Notepad (you should now know how to select all), and copy it (CTRL-C).
  • Paste it into Wordpad, (Start, Run, Wordpad). When finished inserting the special characters in Wordpad, save the file into your als3203 folder.
  • DO NOT SEND THE FILES to me. They will be stored in your als3203 folder for the time being.
