ALS 3203 - Lesson 2
Making Directories (Folders) Using Windows Explorer

A properly managed disk (e.g. floppy disk, hard disk, CD-ROM, DVD, ZIP) will contain folders (directories) to which you associate one or more files. You DO NOT actually PUT files in a folder. What really happens is each file is marked and associated with a folder name so you are given the impression that files are actually put in a folder but in fact they are merely associated with the folder, so when you do a directory listing you see all files associated with the directory. A simple but perhaps confusing concept!

If you do not have a floppy disk drive you can perform the exercises here on your computer's hard drive or on an external drive such as a flash drive or extra hard drive. You may experiment on a computer that does have a floppy drive, but you do not have to submit this portion of the lesson.

Now you will be introduced to making directories within Windows. If you were to make a directory from a command line, there is a command MD (make directory) that you would use. You did this for Lesson 1 when you created the folder als3203 under C:\temp. However, here we will use Windows Explorer to make directories.Run Explorer, or click on the Explorer icon.

What is described here may vary from your system. You may always choose the Help option on your computer and type in "make directories" to get assistance.

OK, let's make some directories on a floppy disk or your hard drive, While still in the Explorer window scroll up until you find the floppy drive icon or your hard drive. Click on this once to select it. Then, from the Explorer menu at the top, choose File, New, Folder. A blue box titled "New Folder" will appear under the drive icon. Type this: Directory_1

Then click outside the box to unselect it. You should see a folder (directory) called Directory_1 showing on the drive. You have just made a directory! If you click on it you will see in the right display window of Explorer that its content is empty. Now close Explorer and return to this page.

Make some more directories (directory_2, 3, 4). See how easy it is!
