ALS 3203 - Lesson 3
Filenames and Paths (PC Users)
(MacIntosh users may skip much of this lesson)
Lesson Objectives:
- Learn how to name and save files
(Both PC and Mac users)
- Learn the meaning of PATH and how to use it in
RUN window (PC users only)
- Learn how to find and open a file (have you ever saved a file but couldn't
find it later?)
- Read and analyse a humorous poem - all users can relate to this one!
Lesson 3 Tasks:
- Name and save a file to your hard disk (or to an external drive such as a Flash drive, floppy disk, etc.)
- Locate and open your saved file (did you have trouble finding it?)
- Read Edgar Allen Poe on Computers, fill out and submit discussion form related to poem (if you have troulble submitting this form please let me know).
- Try (4 questions
only) testing your understanding of paths (PC users will find this more relevant, but Mac Users should also give it a try.) Spacing matters in the path name. This is one reason to not include spaces in folder names, as it may confuse the issue later on.
- Be sure you complete and submit Lesson Completion Certification
for lesson 3, no matter what you end up doing.
Lesson Resources:
- 3½" floppy diskette or external drive(hopefully you have a floppy drive), since some computers
are now shipping without a floppy drive you may have to use your hard drive or another drive
to do this.
If you do not have anexternal drive or a floppy drive, you may skip this section.
- Glossary of lesson terms
(have a look at some older terms)
- A Sense of humor as you read the article
Important terms are found in a glossary which you may access at any time.
