ALS 3203 Lesson 2 - Review A Few Basic Windows Skills

Lesson 2 - Objectives: (Note: If you are taking this course using a MacIntosh you may NOT be able to experience all of this lesson, unless you are familiar with the Linux command line.). This lesson may be review for many of you. But it may be new to an equal number. Depending on your system configuration you may have more or fewer drives. The concepts here are important for future computer use.

Note: Macintosh users do not use drive designations such as C:\, rather a drive is designated by c:

Also, Macfile names do not require a filename extension (although it is a good idea to name files with an extension to reflect the program used to create the file), as their operating system recognizes file formats by header information. There are just a couple of difference between the PC and Mac world. There will be others.

  1. Practice file management (making directories)
  2. View directory structure of hard disk, floppy disk if you have a floppy disk drive)
  3. Recognizing Program files in a file listing (Macintosh may not see similar examples on their system)
  4. Execute programs from command line
  5. Compare GUI and command line procedures, convince you that a command line interface is still useful
Lesson 2 - Tasks: NOTE - the only thing to complete and submit is the lesson certification form after viewing the parts of this lesson.
  1. Consider a few command-line questions (try and figure out how to do these). You have already accomplished at least one command line procedure with the directory exercise in Lesson 1.
  2. Exercise - making directories
  3. Complete and submit Lesson Completion Certification
